The bullring (Behavioural analysis of the building in context to the site)
The signature design of the Selfridges building in the Bullring can be uplifting for individuals as it is seen as both a national and international landmark. Also due to this we saw an increase in activity of individuals around this area.
Fewer people walked nearer this building which may be due to the fact of its old, less welcoming exterior. This could have had a negative emotional impact on individuals as it does not create an emotionally uplifting atmosphere for individuals. As a result it may have been the reason for an increase in litter in the area.
This section of the site was particularly busy because it served as a junction between the market and the south side of the Bullring complex. With the presence of well known restaurants such as Nandos and Handmade burger and Co, we saw an increase in activity in this area also, in particular families were much more present in this area. However, this was only observed in the evening. During the day people did not linger around as much but used this area as a walkthrough.
This section served as a main route for the market as it connected the main road to the east side of the city centre. It was quite busy, but because of how wide this section of pavement was, people were sparsely spread out.The main periods of activity was during the morning as individuals made their way to work. Emotionally this area can seem dull at some periods of the day.
This area of the site features an overhanging shelter in which individuals regularly meet and stay, wait underneath, especially in the rain. Emotionally this can be quite mind numbing for the individuals and create an antisocial environment.

Psychological Boundaries of the site
Along the stretch of Edgbaston Street, there are psychological boundaries at both ends. Towards the west end of the street, there are physical boundaries, such as the barriers and step down onto the road space where taxis park. The sight and sound of these taxis signifies the end of predominantly pedestrian space. To the south is Gloucester Street, which is far narrower than the main market area, and thus is much darker and secluded. Psychologically this deters most people and instead you would only walk down there if you needed to go in that direction. It is not as inviting as the main market area with shop fronts on the northern edge of Edgbaston Street which attract most commuters to walk along that side of the space. The east end of the street/market area is much more inviting, with a large open space and popular attractions such as St. Martin’s Square and the more stylish areas of Bullring Shopping Center. There’s more artificial lighting in this area which makes this part of the market more inviting, and with the majority of the stalls in this area, it feels more purposeful. However, the busy street that directly runs past the east end of Edgbaston
Street is another physiological boundary caused by traffic which divides a safe public space and the fast moving traffic.

Texture & Material analysis
Textures and materials on the ground:
* There were two main materials used: bricks and concrete.
* Two types of brick are used to make up the pattern of the main pathway. The lighter grey bricks are more textured and the darker bricks are smoother as you can see by the reflection from the rain.
* The path is split into three main sections as you are walking through the market by using the two different types of bricks. The main section is for walking and the two other sections have trees and other signs in them.
* The market place floor is made of tarmac.
* This provides a flat base for the stalls which also makes it easier for them to be moved around within this space.
* It also creates a base for any markings that need to be painted onto the ground.
* Trees in the path have the darker bricks to mark out a circle which clearly defines the area for the tree.
* Gravel is used to surround the trees within the circle area.
